Spring in Henderson at the Hendricksons

Spring time is a great time of year. Everything is in full bloom. We were blessed with a wet winter by Vegas standards. Our apricot, pear and peach trees are in bloom The roses look fabulous this year as well.

One of the things I miss about being in Utah is Grandpa Hendrickson's garden. Fresh corn on the cob and many other goodies fresh from "mother earth". Here in Vegas it can be challenging to get anything to grow or so I thought. A couple of years ago we had some luck with watermelon as well as strawberries. It is by no means Grandpas famous Richfield garden, but it will do.

This year we decided to take part of the play area and turn it into a garden. I ran a waterline to the area. We raised the area by using terra cotta stones. After bringing in three pick up truck loads of topsoil, a bunch of miracle grow and some fertilizer we tilled and mixed it all together and planted: Tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries and onions. Drip irrigation was installed and now we will let the desert sun and a little TLC take over.

I plan to chronicle the gardens progress throughout the growing season in hopes we can have a little fresh produce here in the hot desert and we hope and pray they crops don't wither away in the heat!

Here are a few pics of the roses and the garden!

Impressive! Your roses are even out! I'm jealous! Our rose garden is just barely starting to green & the snow keeps dumping on our daffodils & tulips! We thought it was warm enough to plant a vegetable garden.. But now we're worried about the frost. Spring is supposed to be warm and beautiful like your beautiful garden in Henderson :-)
